RELAY
An education pavilion proposal
deriving from material exploration
.

Relay is a pavilion designed to help guide transformative learning. The pavilion houses a re-purposed trilogy of decorative tiles that work together to enhance the learning experience of the Waewae Taku Haere waiata which was gifted to the Massey University Pukeahu campus.
The role of the ceramic tile material has been reconsidered and refreshed in the design process. In three different moments, the ceramic tile accompanies the facilitation, provided by the pavilion, of the learning of this waiata. Listen as the three keys of the waiata tinkle while the wind encourages the strings of tuned chimes to sing.
An arrangement of planters and benches on both sides of the pavilion provides the space with a moment of stillness and korero. A moment of oral and written interaction with the waiata learning, forming clarity through words and context. A layer of reversed, fragmented tiles coats the floor, allowing for water drainage, harnessed acoustics and a play on the origins of the ceramic tile.
